Gallbladder--the ultrasound and HIDA scan cannot locate it?

I am 50 years old. I have occasional severe abdominal pain right where the gallbladder is supposed to be. The pain comes about 5 to 8 hours after eating fried foods or too much red meat (like after an all-you-can-eat BBQ meal) and lasts for an hour or two. I am avoiding those foods and the pain is minimal if at all. I do have some stomach acid after easting on occasion. An ultrasound and then a HIDA scan cannot locate my GB. The HIDA scan was yesterday.

What should I expect for a next step in the diagnosis process? What could be the issue?

I am looking for information so that I am prepared when I speak to my doctor about the test results. Thanks for any help.

It is possible to be born without a gallbladder. If the imaging studies do not show a gallbladder it may be missing.

Diseases like Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction can lead to abdominal pain and gallbladder-like symptoms. They can manifest especially in those without a gallbladder. An ERCP with Sphincter of Oddi manometry can be considered if this disorder is suspected.

I've been having these same symptoms for two days. I was in the hospital last night for it actually. Thinking about going to a new hospital in the next few minutes as the pain is back, so its weird that I ran into this question. They did not do HIDA scans on me, just ultrasounds (maybe because I'm pregnant?) So ill ask what that is. I couldn't imagine going through this pain for years. Good luck to you.
