Is there a difference between the hypnagogic state and the hypnotic state?

These two terms have been used interchangeably in literature and reports over the years, but recent discussions have indicated that they are different things. I know that the hypnagogic state has been associated with hallucinations in the past, but those same hallucinations can occur in a hypnotic state. So, what's the difference?

Any references, especially published professional references, would be appreciated.

EDIT: If there is a difference of state between "being under the influence of hypnotism" and being "between waking and sleep", I would like to have that difference explained. What are the characteristics of the state of mind while under the "influence of hypnotism"?

You might take a look at the International Journal of Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis (link below).

I have yet to see a client (or even hear an Urban Legend about) that has experienced an alien abduction, seeing an apparition, or experiencing any other kind of hallucination while undergoing hypnosis with a therapist.
So, I don't know that I would say a hallucination can occur in a hypnotic state and certainly you would have to define a state of hypnosis before even asking the question of what can occur in that state.

However, it is both an intriguing question and one that demonstrates the need for psi researchers to work closely with researchers in other fields like experimental hypnosis and neuroscience.

If you're familiar with hypnosis, then you've no doubt heard of Master Hypnotist Steve G. Jones. His book, "Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis" has been voted as the best hypnosis course ever made. The book is also available in electronic format at: http://www.hypnosistocontrol.net

If you want to get an edge in everyday communication and lead other people towards your goals this is a must read.
