Where can I learn Chinese Sign Language?

My aunt just adopted from China again, this time it was a deaf girl. Does anyone know where we could learn Chinese Sign Language?

Is your aunt in the U.S.? Unless this child is being raised in China, she won't be speaking Chinese Sign Language. Depending on her age, she may know some words in Chinese Sign Language but she'll soon be using American Sign Language (or the sign language of whatever country she's being raised in.) You'd be better off learning that, and then, when you first see your new cousin, ask your aunt to give you a quick tutorial in the Chinese signs she uses. She won't be able to find services in this country in CSL, so she'll switch to ASL before she gets much older.

To get started in ASL, check out www.lifeprint.com and www.aslpro.com Lifeprint has some online ASL classes, and ASL Pro has an online video dictionary of tons of ASL signs.

Yeah, a lot of people think it's universal, which is weird because languages are very different. Anyway, Chinese Sign Language is pretty recent to China. It's not that the language (signed) is difficult to learn, but it's a while lot easier if you know Chinese. Try amazon for a book or video. It, like any signed language, is very hard to learn from a book! But, you can do it. It's not even supposed to be the most difficult sign language to learn. Good luck!

I'm around the Chinese community /families all week long and MOST parents teach and speak Chinese to their children . So this is bad advice. teach your child Chinese sign language so she can know her culture and she will learn ASL in school. If you are Chinese call your local University or ask a librarian. Another option is to contact Chinese resources and friends that can bring back material for you.
