He does it b4 the game because he keeps the sticks of major victorys so it is his way of remembering who he beat.

Brodeur has been known to keep every stick he has used in a victory. This may be a way to pre-mark which stick he used for the game. It could also be a superstition in which he writes the name of his opponents on his stick. A third reason may be that he had too bring a large amount of sticks over from New Jersey and he marked them before he came so he knew which stick he wanted to use for each game

One possibility: He may be keeping all the sticks he uses as keepsakes, or to put them on some display somewhere. Labeling this stick with the name of the opponent might just be a way of telling it apart from his other sticks.

If he did that, it may be because of the fact that Brodeur naturalized last December (he took the oath of American citizenship in Newark, NJ in December).
That's the only explanation that seems reasonable to me.

How presumptuous of him to put U-S-A on his stick BEFORE his victory if he's labeling his sticks following a victory. I think it's probably a charity thing.
