Why can't I burn DVD's?

I have a notebook with vista, media player, NTI CD & DVD maker and PowerProducer DVD maker. I use DVD+R 4.7GB 1-16x speed dvd (maxell and other brands) and each program says it doesn't detect a writable dvd although there is a setting for this type of dvd. What do I do? Any help is appreciated!
