Impressionist and Realism are two known art styles, as an artist do you consider any when doing your art?

The many types of art styles never entered my art world my entire art life which is more than five decades. Recently I have become more familiar with some and feel they would distract me from my own unique styles. I respect the rich history they portray yet will do as I have been doing, as an artist what are your thoughts about this?

I think it's incredibly important to look back at the history of painting and understand where you, as a painter in contemporary times, fit into that history. If a particular moment in painting history intrigues you, find out why and perhaps you can use that in your work. Or simply admire what has come before you and the achievements of those artists.

Also, don't become too attached to any "style" (even your own) if it gets in the way of becoming a better painter, but at the same time, don't feel obligated to change the way you work if it's what you like to do. :) Happy painting!

The style you have is yours and you can not force your style to be anything it is not. I don't think we are unconsciously affected by any style and I don't aim for a particular look or style when I paint.
I'm sure you have seen subtle style changes in your work, I have. When I look back at older paintings, I can find hints of those changes I did not notice at the time, but became really noticeable later.

Don't worry about loosing your unique style, it won't happen.

Many artist's styles have inspired me to work, but my style is my own. I'm sure an art historian of the future will insist I was influenced by this one or that one, but when I try to repeat styles of others that I love, it just doesn't work. I am me, and that's all I can be.

I personally do not find creativity in imitating other artist's styles.

Having said that, to me painting is like writing, Each one has their own unique signature and can not be reproduced.

I would say continue doing what you are doing.

I guess that helps make up for all the points I lost this morning....
