Barbiturates depress the circulation as well as the breathing. With a large dose the heart slows and the blood pressure drops. This state of shock can be treated with drugs similar to adrenaline which raise the heart rate and bring the blood pressure up again, but there is no specific antidote to barbiturate poisoning
