I am setting up a website for my brand, and have a question about the URL?

As stated above I am setting up a website for my brand(I dont think its really relevant what its for but if you need to know its a clothing label). I know just the littlest things in a url can throw off potential customers. Now I know having a ".com" is very important, even as opposed to a ".net" but the domain name I wish for is taken. In your most humble opinion would it be better to take my domain name to a ".net" or ".US" or should I just change the domain name to something different and stick to the ".com"?

NOTE the domain name that is taken is one of those "parked for free by..." deals, its not really being used, hopefully you know what I'm talking about

Sounds like the brand is actually owned by whomever it was who first got the .com domain name, if you want with the .net version there would be an ongoing problem with people entering the .com version by mistake. Consider going another way:

Come up with another brand name that you could actually trademark and secure the .com for (by the way I believe trademark owners are able to take possession of an existing .com domain) If you go with a .com spelling variation, try to make it different enough that the competitor domain won't result from a mis-type.

Use a longer multi-word domain name that would be your primary search keyword phrase, this can give you a tiny search ranking advantage for that term. Longer domain names are good when search engines is the primary source of traffic and type ins are relatively uncommon.

I would prefer .net as an alt choice, one disadvantage of .us, confidential registration with concealed name and address is not available.
