Which month would be best to visit NYC? June or August?

I would say June, they might be a little more chance of rain. The heat and humidity in August is overwhelming, it makes the ever present stench of urine in the subways many times worst. I prefer May myself.
ADDED: Hotter it gets more crazies are out on the street trying to be your friend. If this is you first time to a big city, don't talk to the crazies, they will follow you around everywhere you walk.

June. Its a little bit cooler and less humid. I would go in early june during the week if possible so its less crowed all the kids are in school people are at work and you have more space to walk in the street lol

August tends to be hot and muggy. The weather in June is usually much more pleasant.
