I have a 1999 Ford Contour, I just bought it and drove it home, the next day I toke it out and it quit & now wont start back up. It has spark and it has fuel. Also the fuel pump is working. I am wondering, WILL THE CAR STILL FIRE IF THERE IS NO TIMING BELT? OR IF THE TIMING BELT IS OFF? Please help?
(My question I appreciate to be helped with is in caps)

No ,the car will not fire without a timing belt.. A timing belt will break before it will slip off..As far as anybody saying that you have destroyed your engine..Ford had done away with a interference engine in the early 90's...If your timing belt broke, then all you have to do is re-time it and install a new belt..You didn't say how many miles the car has... There are a couple of things you need to check before assuming it's a timing belt.. There is a fuse that if blown would cause the car not to start..It should be labeled ECM or ING.. I would check this first..It's hard to say where they put it ( either in the fuse box under or on the driver side of the dash or under the hood)...The other thing I would check is to make sure your ground cables are making good connection.. On a 92 Escort and an 88 Ranger, they have a ground controlled ignition system.. Meaning if it grounded good, it will crank over but will not start ( know this from experience)..
No car will run without a timing belt or timing chain. It is not a 2 cycle engine. Saab used to make a 2 cycle car engine a long, long time ago, but not Ford. Get an OBD2 check done to see what parts are not functioning. It the timing belt broke, there would have been a sharp knocking and then no running. When youmtry to start it it will spin much faster than usual because most of the compression is gone. Bad luck. Get a mechanic to look at it.
Contour=4 cycle engine, engine may have fire with belt broken, best way to see is to peek in the crack where camshafts are and see if they turn when someone turns over the engine, of course that's if the belt is broken, if it slipped camshafts will still turn
