How do you say "people" in Japanese?

I'm doing a project for Japanese class about Japanese New Year.
I'm trying to say: "During Hatsumoode, people buy omamori."
Since I'm in Japanese 1 and we only use simple sentence structures, I'm going to say: "Hatsumoode ni, ______ wa omamori o kaimasu."
In the blank space is where I need the word "people."

Thanks!

The most general way to say it is 「見る」 which is pronounced [miru]. Hope this helps!

it could be "hitotachi" (a group of persons) or "hitobito" (people of a country)
