Earthquake in San Diego?

I live in San Diego, about 120 miles from the quake epicenter. I've felt many earthquakes in my life, some major and most minor. And, this was a very strange one. Usually, there's a jolting sensation when it starts (either side to side, or up and down). And, the shaking is a definite vibration with a lot of rattling and rumbling. But, this one was kind of a gentle swaying sensation. It lasted about 45 seconds, but it actually took me about 15 to 20 seconds to realize what it was. By then, all the window blinds in my house were swaying back and forth, knocking into the walls. And, that's really the only sound I heard from it.

Whenever there's an earthquake lately, I immediately go to the USGS website to see where it hit. We rarely get more than small to moderate earthquakes close to San Diego, with most of them we feel being major ones elsewhere. I initially thought it might have been in LA, because the distance would have caused the rolling sensation (that much distance kind of buffers the vibrations). And, I was surprised to see that it hit in the Calexico area.

Also surprising was that there was no local news coverage in San Diego after it hit, even though it was less than 1-1/2 hours to the local evening news (I know it was Easter, but no one was in the studio?). And, the only channel covering it was CNN. So, I watched that for about 20 minutes and then went back to what I was watching before the earthquake hit....Show more

I live in San Diego. With the exception of college, I grew up in San Diego. I came back from college married, and six years later started a family in San Diego. It's now seven years later, and we're in San Diego. Experiencing earthquakes isn't scary. You just sort of stand there and say, "Huh." Then it's over and you check the USGS site to see how large it was, then go back about your business. There's almost always no damage, anywhere, no injuries... it is NOT scary. This was probably "The Big One" that they've been threatening me with for the last 4 decades.

Of course, my wife didn't grow up with earthquakes, so she's not a fan... but I'm not bothered by them at all... neither are my kids who have grown up with them....Show more

I don't live in San Diego but i do live in the Los Angeles are. I have been here all my life and I am still frightened of Earthquakes. Recently i have been more edgy because of the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.

The buildings in CA. Have strict code enforcement. There was no major damage out there because we have Earthquake proof buildings....Show more

i have no idea but it sounds like thats in the US and it seems like they have tons of earthquakes i once had a widget and it would always say when there was an earthquake. Where i live there is fault lines and my friends house if there was a reasonable earthquake her house would fall down a slope i calculated. I have only been in one earthquake and it wasnt that scary just weird....Show more
