You don't mention what amount of an expenditure you have in mind so it is a little difficult giving too specific suggestions. However, up dating the drive train would make it more roadable and user friendly on today's highways. However, while you are at it don't forget the suspension and the braking aspect of your intended upgrade as well as the steering. There are a number of companies located throughout the U.S. who deal entirely with the up grades you are referencing. "Speedway Motors" located in Lincoln, Nebraska, would be an excellent place to start looking for upgrades. By attempting to incorporate enhancements in all aspects of the running gears of the vehicle it will be a much more enjoyable driver.

it will cost you more and lost a lot of time.. are you willing to do that ?
new engine model usually fuel injected.
when you convert your truck to fuel injected engine.
you need to replace the ff,
engine, transmission, electrical harness to new engine,
change all engine and transmission mounts/supports
modify the exhaust pipe to fit the new engine
change the air condition mountings, and other supporting parts
modify the cooling system
change the gas tank or convert to fit the fuel motor pump
modify the propeller shaft,

so many other conversion..
i think it is be better if you just recondition your present engine,
do some paint job to your engine or chrome it
add some power booster device like TURBO etc etc.,, make it twin turbo for V type engine

cost less and can be done fast

Have you considered maybe changing the motor and tranny to a mid-1980's (to mid 1990's) Ford 4 cylinder with accompanying transmission (decide if want auto or manual). It's a smaller motor than trying to hot-rod it with a V8, is easier on gas (prices will rise), and there's was a long run on the parts production years for the motor. Parts would be easily obtainable from just about any parts store or wrecking yard. You can easily find carb manifold too for it, if don't want to switch to fuel injection. Just a thought.
