1) know how to use the camera properly 2) take pics people want to buy 3) be VERY frustrated when you find you can't make any money...
people usually make money from photography, when they get commissions... and if you aren't a well established photographer, you can't get commissions...
Just do like everyone else seems to think they can do as soon as they buy a new DSLR. Be a wedding photographer. It does not seem to matter whether or not you know what you are doing, no one else does, but still they think they are some kind of "professional photographer" and should be paid big money simply because they are carrying an entry level DSLR around. Join the crowd.

ADD: No, you don't HAVE to have a business license. Just realize that with no license, you are skating on thin ice with the tax collectors. Also, if you have no license, you are likely to also have no liability insurance. Have fun on your first law suit when the court is trying to take all your "business" and personal assets.
I sell my photos with Microstock agencies (3 months). I have registered with and have portfolios on what are considered to be the top 3 sites for earnings.
I do not have many pictures online yet.... They are quite picky about the quality of the image, but then that is there business. Lets face it, a rubbish shot is not going to sell anyway and could make them look unprofessional. All 3 sites have different standards and reviewers so that is why one site has more of my shots.
You are not going to get rich quick and I just look at it as a little extra money for camera gear. If you work hard at it for a good while or already have a lot of really good pics then you could make a good amount reasonably quickly. My small portfolio is not making much but then I'm not giving up my day job!
They set the prices of the image and you make a commission. Marketing and designers are the usual customers. Some have subscriptions with the stock site and regularly buy there.
Here are the links to the 3 sites that I am registered with and there are many more out there but as I said these are considered to be the top 3....
