There is a small unit attached to my water heater; an LED light on it is blinking. What does this mean? I don't know much about home maintenance issues and was hoping someone could help be out before I'd have to hire someone just to take a look at it.

What type of water heater? Is it new? Some new water heaters have a diagnostic feature built into the gas valve. When it is blinking it just means that the pilot is lit. It saves you from having to get on your hands and knees and trying to see into the burner compartment.
