Exactly what do they mean when they talk about a darby in english soccer?

I am new to watching soccer and have a lot of questions about it.
When they refer to an english team playing a darby:
Do they mean playing a team that is a long time rival? In the same city? Home and home series? Does every team have only 1 team to play a darby with?
There are teams that are long time rivals because they frequently compete for some title but do not reside near each other. Would that be consider a darby? How and who decides when you have a darby?
Do non-english teams have darbies?
Thanks for any info

A local derby (pronounced darby) is when two teams from the same city play. Manchester United v Manchester City is a Manchester derby. Tottenham v Arsenal is a North London derby. Liverpool v Everton is a Liverpool derby. In Scotland, Glasgow Rangers v Glasgow Celtic is the Glasgow derby.
Liverpool and Manchester United are big rivals but when they play it's not a local derby.
By the way, the correct name of the sport is Association Football not soccer. Teams are known as Liverpool F.C, Everton F.C, Manchester United F.C. They are Football clubs not soccer clubs.
Google Association Football and you will get lots of information about the game.
Good Luck and enjoy the greatest sport on earth.

It's spelt Derby but pronounced Darby. Its usally when two different teams from the same city of area are playing against each other. EG Liverpool and Everton -( I don't know if you know that Everton is in Liverpool) Man Utd v Man City Spurs V Arsenal. You also can hear announcers refer to things like "Super Sunday", this is usually when there are two matches played one after another, with very popular teams.. ( on a Sunday obviously) eg Man Utd v Liverpool followed by Arsenal v Chelsea. - and of course these fixtures are of great importance in league placings.

a darby is a match between two rival teams from the same city such as, Man United vs. Man City (which is being played tomorrow) or Arsenal vs. Tottenham (Northern London)
