For one of my projects, I had to do a complete branding for a restaurant. I chose to do a vintage restaurant for the Woodstock era, bringing back the 60s and 70s. The reason I chose that is because I recreated a Filmore poster. Filmore posters are crazy looking advertising bands for the concerts. These are amazing works of art and able to made quickly in Photoshop, if not drawn out. These posters leave a lot to the imagination, and since your teacher may have come out of that era, it would be nice to see that again. Research filmore posters, as well as woodstock '69.
Another idea could be something punk'ish, maybe Pop art. Use of bright colors and halftones, lines, maybe a vectorized face of some sort, you can basically just use whatever you want in pop art.
