Yeah- XP is NOT old by any means. They just came out with XP Embedded last year. Anyhow- get FREE Avast Anti-virus here: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download The message your getting may be about INTERNET EXPLORER being too old. They dont use or support IE6 anymore. You MUSt DEFRAG you XP computer soon. Also run anti-malware program. Use Malwarebytes Here: http://www.0dayz.ws/index.php?dir=MalwareBytes/ Get the version 1.45 Also Uninstall and delete Unused Programs and files.ANY other XP related issues or questions I am one click away. -take care
Start>>accessories>> system tools >> disk cleanup, and also defragment.
Then try system restore and see if that helps in downloading any antivirus programs. side note the best free antivirus is the one i use its called AVG, rly good stuff. also try something called malwarebytes.(yes its free) it prevents alot of viruses that can skip past most anti virus programs. Go check on -cnet.com- for these programs. its a safe place to DL stuff and has alot of resources. and yes i use XP also so no worries on any of that stuff not being compatable.
If it prevents you from DLing those programs. you might have to DL them on the desktop of another pc, save them to a memory stick and then transfer them onto your pc via that. Malwarebytes actualy runs in the background and starts about the same time the windows OS starts but you can do manual scans with it. so if you can get that installed, turn it on and then when your sure the automatic on settings are there restart and it should nab anything thats stopping you from fixing your pc. cause some viruses actualy make you restart your pc, then when it restarts, it starts same time as the windows OS and prevents any antivirus programs from even turning on. but malwarebytes starts before any viruses so itl get there first.
If all that doesnt help im not sure without looking at the thing myself.
First thing I would do is make sure you are running MS XP with SP3. You can right click on "My Computer" icon and select "Properties" The window that opens will tell you what SP you have under the "System" section. If you are not running SP3 then you should update windows. (Click on Start menu and click on "windows update"
Once done, or if you already have SP3, I would suggest you download Avast! Antivirus. It is 100% free and you can get it here: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download Make sure you register it and it will be valid for 1 year.
Another piece of, additional, software you could download to help keep your PC running smooth is Advanced System Care by iobit. When you run this it will clean up all the junk files and whatnot that can slow your PC down. http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html
Other software I would recommend are Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and Spybot Search & Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html, both are free.
Many good answers and advice already given. One thing I learned to do when having multiple antispy and antivirus programs is to set your own scheduled updates and computer scans times. Many times these are preset to update and scan when you first turn on your computer. They slow the computer down, and can lock it up, especially if you are doing your thing on the computer at the same time. Plus, they bump heads with each other as they are trying to do their thing. Schedule each for a different day or time so that they can run their update and scan without interference from you or another antispy or antivirus program. This helped a lot for me.
First off, avg is the best free anti virus software out there.
And i had this problem with my old windows XP too, it turns out there was a virus on the computer that wouldn't even let me search the word virus on Google!
I ended up calling the geek-squad from best buy and they fixed me up so well. they basically just cleared my hard drive and ran a restart of XP.
If you don't have anything too important I suggest you call bestbuy or another computer service. I've tried to eliminate viruses myself but you can't completely get rid of them without professional help.
