Well, you could compare it to the BMW range and Mercedes Range or cars, in that case, Volvo is missing a larger sedan (like a 7-series or S-Class). Also, they are missing more hard core versions of their current line ups such as maybe an "S80-R" with a twin-turbo version of the V8 you can get in it that with like 525bhp to compete with the M5 and AMG E class.
Since the Ford (and now Geely) takeover, The have tried to put style in a car that previously had all the pizazz and personality of a washing machine. But Volvo still somehow made a box cool two decades before Scion, Honda, Kia or Nissan decided that right angles were the way to go .
Study the 140 and 240, and you will see where (in my humble opinion) where Volvo needs to return to.
What Volvo is really missing is the kind of cars they used to produce - cars that would last, were easy to work on, and rarely every had any type of problem. Volvos today are cheap electronics, cheaper drivetrain components, and cheapest interior appointments. The resale value of Volvos is completely trashed. You used to be able to resell a Volvo no matter what the mileage or age and get a decent price. You can't even get a good price on one that's only a year old now.
first i know that volvo ab truck is a totally separate company, never the less what i would like would be a diesel pick up chassis suitable for ambulance conversion [something to compete with the ford super duty] g.m. and dodge simply have nothing . although the cummins diesel is more than suitable the chassis is found wanting, g.m.has weak isuzu engine, trouble prone drive train, a substandard electrical system and a poor overall dispatch record. volvo ab makes nice trucks that last, but nothing small enough for this use. the fords have done admirably for years and the company[ford] knows what we need /expect and delivers in spades, decent competition would however improve the breed. i have no idea what the new owners will do with this company but i hope they get back to a less gimmicky product overall.[putting an intelligent operator in the drivers seat is always better and safer than having a bunch of computers mucking up the entire show]
A sports car. Volvo generally makes pretty good cars, I don't know if they have the passion to make a good sports car / supercar. That said, it never hurts (except the pocketbook) to try, right?
