Question about building an outdoor pergola?
Would it be cheaper/and or easier to build a pergola using wood or cinder blocks for the 4 bases holding it up. Any idea of approximate costs for a 10x10 area?

Treated wood would work best! It would look better and it would be cheep as well! I am in the progress of pricing one for myself. Mine would cost about $2,700.00 but mine is going to be 10feet x 60feet so yours should only cost about $500.00 without labor! If you do use say a 4x4 or 6x6 treated beam, make sure you dig 3 feet down and use a sauna tube and fill with concrete (call before you dig). Then you need a metal base support with a 1" threaded bolt so that your beams are on a strong base and will not move! Keep in mind that if you use cinder-blocks, you still need that 3 foot deep foundation base or it will come crashing down within a year or two!

Anything that goes into the ground or are framing boards, I would want pressure treated. What this means is that wood has been sprayed with some chemicals and then pressed to make it denser. All of this is done to help prevent rot, but makes the boards not so nice to look at. The top boards I would buy regular wood. However, you will need to treat these boards (probably) every year with a sealant. The sealant is doing what the pressure treating does, but allows you to see a nice, finished wood. Some of these sealants can also be wood stains so you can stain the wood for a different look. Thompson Water Seal is a good brand of sealant to use.
