What is your definition of "classical music"?

This is directed at those whose questions were answered with "not classical music". I've seen questions about pop songs, rock songs, country songs, rap, movie and even video game soundtracks in this category. Why did you direct your question in this category, and not one of the others? Just curious.

I know what classical music is and I know you know what classical music is. My question is specifically directed to those who asked about all those different types of music. I wondered what it is that made them think of certain songs or compositions as "classical"? For example, type of instruments used in piece? Any type of written music? Type of voice (if the singer sings high, it must be opera?)

Ahh, Birdgirl. I welcome your question, but you have phrased your question in such a way that you will not attract the main offenders - mostly because they don't even know what classical music is and, therefore, won't be attracted to a question with that phrase in it.

I'm afraid you have to realise that these people are, in the most part, both terminally stupid and immoveably lazy - something our PC-obsessed society actively encourages. Their actions are always someone ELSE's responsibility, you see.

You will find the two most common reasons for these mis-postings are 1) people can't distinguish the words 'classic' and 'classical' (what a difference two little letters can make!) and 2) Y!A directs ANY question with the word 'piano' in it to the classical section. Of course, most of these people are too lazy to check if their question is being posted in an appropriate category or not.

What further confounds belief is that many of these idiots, when receiving the advice that they have mis-posted their question, become quite indignant and abusive, often asking 'what does it matter?' When they ask this question, I point out to them that, to get an appropriately helpful answer to any given question, it is advantageous to present it to a group of people with knowledge/interest/experience in the subject. Asking about Miley Cyrus (bleaargh!) in the classical music section does not fit this criterion.

Welcome to our world!

and I give all those questions the same response... "Not a classical music question."
If you have a question about rap... post it in the rap category... pop - pop category.
The definition that I use is: classical music - (or western art music) Music composed and structured in the tradition of western art music following established form and format.
Is it so much to ask for people to direct their questions to the right category?

well there are two definitions you can use.

Technically, Classical music is from the Classical period. Which was pretty much focused around the 18th century.

Realistically, Classical can be described as old in a way. Classic rock is old rock. Classic Rap is like 80's hip hop. Basically, Classical just means some of the first music of the genre
