2000 Chevy cavalier question?

My cavalier has over 200,000 miles on it and it just started giving us a problem. I am hoping someone can point us in the right direction to get it fixed. It is idling roughly when we are in stop an go traffic, when it does this it has died a couple of times, like it doesn't have any gas, but it starts right back up. Last week my husband changed the fuel pump, sending unit, and fuel filter, he also filtered the gas before putting it back in the tank. He is planning to do a tune up this week. I am hoping someone can help us figure out what may be wrong with it. Thanks!

A tune up that includes spark plugs and spark plug wires and new air filter will do a lot more than changing anything with the fuel.

A tune-up might improve things. After 200,000 miles more might be wrong though. Stuff does actually wear out. Head gaskets, no matter how carefully you maintain your car, wear out, just like tires wear out. Cam belts get old, stretch, lose teeth and start slipping the cam out of time. You cannot stop this from happening except by replacing the belt before the engine gets messed up. There's lots of stuff gremlinds do to your car at night.

the engine idle speed is low , tune up should sort it  if it does not the rough idle you describe could be a valve failing to confirm this you will need to get the compression checked

it could be the idle air control sensor, maybe the throttle body needs cleaning out, air filter clogged, a vacuum leak. an engine can,t run right if it can,t breathe.
