What does this mean on guitar tabs?

I know the "/" is used for sliding between notes but what does it mean when it doesn't have a second note to slide to:

12\

or

\12

What are you supposed to do if there aren't two number that you're sliding between? Is it just sliding up/down the neck of the guitar to an arbitrary distance. Can this even be done on acoustics?

Sliding

12/ slides to, for example 8

\12 means something else slided to 12.

It can go in either direction though.

If there aren't two numbers, it means slide to zero and release. At least that's how I've always seen it played. If it's \12, as stated it's a number to 12, but it would be coming from zero(really just do 1 and immediately start sliding up).

slide the string itself up and down.
