My favorite show Lost is over. A friend told me I should start watching the Fringe. Since it has been on for two seasons already, what have I missed that I'll need to know to pick it up? Or will it make sense if I just start watching now?

In a nutshell; a three person team - woman, man and man's crazy father who is a scientist - solve crimes/mysteries from a parallel world where everything is "the same but different" as here. This season the man found out that he is actually FROM the alternate world because when the "him of this world" died as a child, his crazy scientist father crossed over to the alternate world and stole him from the parallel family.
HOWEVER...
The show is SOOOOO intense that though you may be able to enjoy it during the third season, there is so much foundation story that you will definitely be lost from time to time so you really should take the time to watch the first two seasons before the third one starts.

To be honest, I would suggest that you either download or buy season one and season two. Recapping two seasons of a show is pretty hard, and trust me, the first 2 seasons are really good and you would not want to miss out.

You can rent season 1 and possibly even season 2 on dvd. DO IT!! IT'S AWESOME!
