"NCTAF reports that almost a third of all new teachers leave the classroom after three years and close to fifty percent leave after five years. Over a quarter of a million teachers stop teaching every year."

The turnover rate for education depends on several things, in special education (where I am), we have a the typical burn out rate is about 3-5 years. This is because of something called "passion fatigue" where the emotional drain of caring for students with special needs and the physical aspects that also come along with the job (we are often kicked, bitten, screamed at, and hit). Another reason for the high turnover rate across the board is that education is a female heavy profession. We get married, have kids and decide not to come back to work. If it sounds a little 1950's sorry, but it's true.

Depending on the area the 3-5 year burnout rate is between 30-50%. As for why there are any number of reasons and I don't believe there is much to say a specific single reason. Among those reasons are disillusioned people believing it's easy work, classroom issues (curriculum, classroom management, regulations, unsupporting administration), getting spread too thin with "extra work" (duty periods, sponsoring activities, admin paperwork which is increasing with inclusion), unsupporting parents, state performance mandates placing all the pressure for students to learn on the teachers when the students don't care or want to learn.
