help with a 1991 explorer?

last week i went down the highway about 40miles there and back and once on the highway i switched to overdrive now this week it takes 5 sometimes ten minutes for it to get out of first gear (it's automatic btw) and then it still seems like it is shifting a little late, i checked the transmission fluid and it was pretty low i put some in and checked the fluid level again and it was fine but it is still not shifting right my friend thinks that i could have put a little too much in it and that could be it but it doesn't say that so i don't know what to do i would love any help and sorry about the length. thanks!

Sounds like a shift solenoid.

first how did you check the tran. oil level? Was vehicle on level ground with oil hot and motor running, trans. in neutral etc? Did you use the correct fluid type, i.e. the one for ford? When was fluid and filter last changed? If all is good then you may need to have trans. checked at a specialty shop. they will run some tests to isolate problem.

Have you changed the transmission filter and fluid? The filter could be clogged, slowing down the clutch response time.

Ford Exploder?
How may miles are on it?

It could be a speed sensor, or shift solenoid.??
