When is the best time to plant Cone Flowers and Black eyed susans?
I would like to plant these 2 flowers and do i need a real good quality soil? Thanks. Any past experience knowledge, would be great to hear. I sometimes notice bunches of black eyed susans that have that real bright yellow color. I wonder if it is the quality of the soil that makes the better colors? Any help is greatly appreciated. The planting would be done in Northern New Jersey USA Thanks.

I work as a gardener and I think I can help you. If you are starting both flowers by seed then spring is the best time to plant them. If you are planting full-size flowers then summer is a good time. Black eyed Susans grow well in sun or part shade. The soil can be average quality or clay soil. You don't need a really rich, fertile soil for these plants and they are also drought tolerant. The flower colors can vary from yellow, orange, and red with brown or green centres as there are various forms of Rudbeckia (also known as Black Eyed Susan) The soil quality does not determine what color of flowers you will have. The cultivar R. Fulgida is a popular choice and is the one I have. It is bright yellow with a dark brown centre. Coneflowers (or Echinacea) are great flowers to have in a garden. They grow well in full sun, with average or rich soil. (you can improve your soil by adding compost if you want to) There are many different cultivars of this plant and the flower colors can range from purple, pink, white, orange/pink, etc. You should check out a good garden centre to see the choices of Coneflowers and Black Eyed Susans. Good luck with your planting.
