I would love to do a lot of things without putting hours and hours of practicing in ;). i've played for 9 years now and it took time and determination to become successful. Although lessons would be the best choice, you could also just buy easy sheet music at a piano store, and work through counting, and rhythms. If that works than you can gradually increase your difficulty level. I am sorry but learning by ear is a skill few people have, and it's the "fake" way to music. Good luck.

Lazy Entitlement / Marxist is about as oxymoronic as it gets. Look at the essence of this question; that essence answers your own question. You are already aware that reading is 'a part of it' or you would not be asking if you can, uh 'Get Away' with not doing it. So, here ya go. Change, "Learn to play the piano without ever learning how to read Sheet Music?" To, "Learn to play the piano without ever learning." There is your real answer. O.K. after that, the ONLY question is, "how bad do you want it, guy?" Best regards.

Do you think you could get good at martial arts without studying under a master? Why should piano be any different?

This probably isn't the answer you want to hear, but if you really want to play piano, then take lessons. They're expensive, but anything that's worth having is going to cost something. Sure, there are people like Stevie Wonder who can play marvelously without ever having a lesson, but they are the .001% of society who are genius at something.

In order to achieve even a modest level of ability you'll have to sweat it out through at least 3-4 years of lessons and daily practice.

there are other methods of learning piano, you can try by using your ear. this simply means hearing a note then finding it and playing it, and as you get better at it you will be able to play proper music just by going by your ear.
an easy way if you just want to play popular songs is to learn the chords on the piano by teaching yourself. then you can just look up the chords to the song you want to learn and work it out your self.
there are also some good tutorials on youtube that you can watch.
