What day of the year does London get the most intense sunlight?

We were talking about the Beatles song today where "you can get a tan from standing in the English rain." Someone said there's a certain day of the year in London where the sun is closest to it, based on the Earth's rotation and orientation.

Any truth in that? If so, what day is it?

The entire Earth (not just London) is closest to the sun on January 3rd, and farthest from the sun on July 3rd. However, the difference is very small. The sun's rays are most intense for the entire northern hemisphere (including London) on June 21st, the summer solstice. This is when the the noontime sun is as high as it can go for observers in the northern hemisphere.

June 21st (other wise know as the summer solstice) at 12:00 pm, like the rest of the northern hemisphere...

Summer solstice - June 21st, at precisely 1200.
