Should I invest in a macro lens?

Question

I've been doing photography for a few months now and I'm thinking of purchasing a macro lens. (http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-EF-50mm-f-2-5-compact-Macro-lens-excellent-/310233051725?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item483b54b24d) 
But I'm wondering if perhaps a different lens would be a better investment. I want to get into abstract photography. So I feel that a macro lens could certainly help me with such things. But I'd like to get a few more opinions. So what do you think?

If you're going to get a 50mm, get the f/ 1.8. It'll do better in low lighting and you could use it for a portrait lens. 

If you want a real macro lens for close ups in bugs or flowers, the 50mm might not be for you.

Check out some of those threads. Are those the kinds you would like to do? If you look around the forum, you can find out what most of them use. I believe the majority of those forum users use a Canon 100 f2.8.

Macro lenses are highly specialized lenses. Judging by the photos you take, I'd recommend probably the 50 1.8, but if you want to get super close to flowers, bugs, or take pictures of the human eye, than the macro lens is for you.
