How exactly does drawing a circle of chalk on the ground and sitting inside it protect you from demons?

I saw this advice on Y/A today as one of the ways you can protect yourself from demons while using the ouija board. I am curious to know how it works. Are demons allergic to chalk or something?

Casting a circle is a pagan practice. It keeps things in and out. The actual chalk and visual presence of the circle is not where the protection comes from, it comes from the intent of the circle caster. The person who casts the circle has to do so with the intent of it being for protection in order for it to protect. The chalk is just a tool. A circle can be cast without the use of chalk. It can be cast by walking around in a circle, using a stick of incense and tracing a circle, or just mentally visualizing a circle of protection around the person.

I know that you don't believe in all this stuff but I'm just giving you the reasoning behind it. When it comes to magick and spiritual protection (that doesn't involve a deity) etc. it is heavily centered upon intent and belief in the power of that intent. If a deity is involved, then someone can call on them for help or protection and maybe not really believe that this protection will be given yet still receive it. When it comes to self applied protection methods though, the power is in the intent.

*edit*

Let me clarify that because that's a generalization. A circle of salt IS protection with or without the power of intent backing it. Chalk does not hold any spiritual protection properties on it's own but if someone "charged it" with protection before using it, then it could automatically provide protection.

The Circle Of Chalk

I normally don't cast circles, seeing as I''m a traditionalist. When I do, it certainly isn't to keep out demons--I work with demons all the time. Now, most other witches would strongly disapprove of this, seeing as most other witches are 'white' witches. I'm at the very least grey, and not Wiccan in the slightest, so their point is moot. While demons do tend to be the 'evil and destructive' stereotype, it simply depends on the age of the creature--Demons too young cannot control their behavior as of yet(Think young vampires from Twilight, as much as I hate to use that example) and some demons who are incredibly old simply don't give a **** and harass people for fun. As with humans, not all demons are evil. This applies to all creatures. Back to circles, though, they generally just keep out interfering energy, if anything else. I would only use one for a very important ritual I didn't want disturbed. When you know how to cast one properly, though, it does help protect from any unwanted beings/energies. Quite honestly, I'd be more afraid of fairies than demons: They're far, far more mischievous and tend to move in groups. And no, I do not currently know someone in a coven. My Wiccan friend used to be in one, but I believe they had a falling out.
