Debt owed to me since 1998?

I was just contacted by someone in my past, who happens to owe me thousands of dollars in phone/cable/rent/utilities from way back in 1998-ish.

Its far back, but I was wondering if there was some way I could still get that money. Would a lawyer just laugh at me for trying to gain restitution from the 90's?

TIA, just seeing what, if anything, I can do.

It was not a scam. It was an email through Facebook, and not a scam as I haven't really told anyone about.

First, are you sure it isn't a scam email.

If you are, you might consider asking the person straight up. You should try to gather any info about their whereabouts and then, if they don't pay, contact a debt collection agency. You'd only get like half if they were successful, but $1 is better than $0.

Sorry, but the statute of limitation in most states to file a small claim lawsuit over such a matter has long ago expired.

You may not be able to recover it, but you may be able to write it off as a non-business bad debt, a short-term capital loss on Sch D.

To much time has passed.
