After reading your last post, being a backyard breeder has nothing to do with location, so putting the dogs inside to breed still makes you a back yard breeder. Anyone who does not show their dogs to champion status, get all the genetic and mandatory health checks done on the dog before even THINKING about breeding is a backyard breeder whether they breed purebreds or mutts.

If you had studied Rotties for years, had several dogs that you showed competetively, they were AKC registered had a really good pedigree came from champion bloodlines, had been shown to champion status or Best of Breed and you had done all the necessary health testing, carefully chosen the stud to breed her too that also had good bloodlines and free from health issues and genetic defects, had studied breeding in depth including having a breed mentor when first starting out and offered health guarantees on each puppy including a lifetime genetic health certificate, carefully screen potential adoptees and took your dogs back for any reason if the owner could no longer keep the dog, then NO you would not be a back yard breeder. You on the other hand plan on simply putting two dogs together and selling off the puppies to anyone who will buy one pretty much not caring if they have Rottie experience and you're probably not offering any kind of health guarantee, nor will you take the puppies back if they don't work out, so yes, that makes you a back yard breeder.

If you're serious, then the first step is to become knowlegeable about the breed and all their health issues, getting a breed mentor and begin showing your dog.

That's the difference between a serious breeder of purebreds and a backyard breeder of purebreds.

Are both your dogs registered with the AKC or another nationally recognized kennel club? Are they certified for good health at least three generations back? Are they both 3 years old or older? Have you researched any genetic defects these breeds commonly carry, and had them tested for them? Do they meet the breed standard for conformation? Those are just a few of the things professional breeders do to ensure a litter of healthy, happy puppies.

If the new owner decides they don't want the dog, will you take it back, refund the money, and find it a new home? Will you have all the puppies examined by a vet? Will you take the mother in for regular checkups when she's pregnant? What kind of birthing setup do you have? Is it properly heated? Sheltered? How often will you check the puppies, to make sure they're warm enough and feeding properly? How much money are you willing to spend to ensure their health and wellbeing?

Good breeders sometimes lose money on a litter; it's part of the business. Sometimes they barely break even. Most of them are in it because they love it and want to contribute something positive to the breed, not for the income.

I got a purebred puppy from a backyard breeder. She was a great dog, but she had tons of problems, because her parents weren't certified. I suspect she was inbred. I got another purebred from a good breeder, and she is 12 now with no major problems. I haven't had to empty my savings account to take care of her. Which breeder do you think I'd go back to?

If you have two mutts and you want a litter of cute little mutt puppies, you might as well go down to the pound and look for some there. There are plenty.

To be honest, I would rather buy a mutt from a shelter any day, than purchase a 'purebred' dog from a BYB. My reasons? BYBs and other disreputable breeders are destroying the reputations of purebred dogs. They breed dogs that often "look" like a specific breed, yet they may have very little else in common with the breed. For example: I have seen 2 BYB Dobermanns recently, both with shy timid temperaments. One of which clearly showed early signs of fear aggression, when approched. Ruination of the breed if you ask me. Nothing like the breed. NOT a Dobe in my opinion. Yet people then see or meet a dog like that, and assume because it "looks" like a purebred Dobe... That, THAT is what a Dobe is meant to be. Yuck. A mutt is just that - A mutt. A dog of unknown or even multiple or 'guessed' genetics. So the temperament, appearance and breed of the dog are generally an unknown quantity. So the purchaser is not (or at least - should not) be expecting anything in particular. It’s a gamble, as to what the dog will turn out like. But you KNOW it’s a gamble. I have less of an issue with that. However: There are also those that intentionally breed mixed dogs with no purpose... Then give them a fru fru made up, oodle smoodle name to pretend to the unsuspecting buyer that they ARE in fact a breed, when they are not. Then charge a FORTUNE, even though there is NO justification for doing so! Usually not a penny has been spent on proving a dogs working ability, or health testing for either/all the combined breeds known defects or issues. Therefore a “designer mutt” should be no more expensive than a shelter dog IMHO :) (or in fact less, if it has not been desexed and vaccinated etc). EDIT: To the poster that mentioned she has been accused of Back Yard Breeding Toy Poodles. You seem confused on what qualifies someone as a backyard breeder. So let me clarify for you! It has little to do with caring for your dogs and feeding good nutrition, AFTER they get pregnant. I am sure many BYBs do that. However it has EVERYTHING to do with breeding an example of your breed that it TRUE to standard - In temperament and looks. It has to do with knowing your breed, and its strengths AND weaknesses. Conducting the breed appropriate health testing BEFORE EVER BREEDING, to try to AVOID those weaknesses, being passed on. Let alone working aptitude or titles!!?? Also a good breeder never has accidental pregnancies. Your answer showed your ignorance on these very points, that REPUTABLE breeders are SO passionate about. THAT is why you have undoubtedly been labelled a BYB in the past. BYBs are easy to pick when you know how. Do you even know your breeds standard? Or do you have to do a quick google search to check? Do you know what age to do hip tests? Do you know what a passing hip score is? What about thyroid test? What health tests are applicable to your breed? What genetic disorders are common to the poodle, that you need to test for to avoid? Have all your breeding stock PASSED these expensive health tests, PRIOR to being bred? What working or show titles have your dogs received?? If you have failed on any of these fronts - Then I am afraid you are a BYB.

Briefly, the difference is the BYB is breeding for money. The reputable breeder is breeding for the betterment of his bloodline (ie trying to improve with every generation), and his breed - the income from their litters is 'useful', but isn't the reason why they are breeding. Sorry if this sounds pompous, but it's the fact.

Further the BYB, normally speaking, is just putting dog A to b itch B, with no more thought than that. Most good breeders research pedigrees, having shown their stock and put them through all relevant testing for their breed before even thinking about doing a mating.

And just for the record, it has nothing to do with breeding in back yards. It's just a derogatory title put on indiscriminate breeding, whether it's purebred to purebred, or mutt to mutt (which it more normally is).
