I know most DVD player support MP4. But I personally think you don not need to convert your avi file. You can burn avi to DVD and to play it on your home DVD player.

Convert and burn avi format video to dvd to play well on home dvd player, so easy, you just need to use a right software to convert your avi format video to standard video dvd and burn to DVD-/+R disc, because most home dvd players only recognize standard video DVD well, you can follow me to use RZ DVD Creator, it can convert any videos to standard video dvd and burn to any dvd disc(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc), such as convert avi format video to standard video dvd and burn to DVD-R/+R disc, easy to use, insert a DVD-R or DVD+R disc into the computer dvd burner drive, run RZ DVD Creator, select the dvd burner drive as the target folder, drag and drop the avi video into the software, then press the "START" button, you will get a right standard video dvd from your avi format video, and you can play the burned standard video dvd well on your home dvd player.
