Mounted on your steering column under the dash is a box called the neutral safety switch, it is there to only allow the car to be started in park or neutral. It has a small steel rod from the ignition switch that moves and activates this switch. The box may need to be adjusted slightly, there are two screws that hold it to the column, worst case scenario is the switch contacts may be worn and need replacing.
