Need help with black hair dye, please?

I'm not an expert with hair dyes and the chemicals in it but at one time I dyed my hair black, it was black but when the sunlight hit my hair it was incredibly purple- I loved it. I know that I went somewhere wrong because I bought regular black hair dye from the Revlon hair brand... What did I do that made my hair purple in the light? (it was much stronger than a tint, my hair was completely purple.) I really want to know how because I want to redo the same mistake again but with blue. How can I do that?
I really appreciate your help : )

You couldn't have done something wrong - it's impossible to change the colour of hair dye by making a mistake. Either the hair dye you bought had purple tones to it that weren't clear in the product description, or there was a packaging mistake and the company put the wrong hair dye in the box.

To get the blue tones, you just have to find a really really dark blue hair dye. I used to use Schwarzkopf Live Colour XXL in Cosmic Blue 90. It gave the appearance of black hair, but when sunlight hit it the blue tones shined through. Hope this helps!

you didnt do something wrong, it's the nature of the color.
If you want it to look blue, just buy a blue black hair dye :)
