what to check when buying a used laptop/netbook?

what do i check when buying a used laptop/netbook? i have no gadgets to plug into it or anything so all i can do is a simple eye check and poke around the device as i would normallyt,
so what do i chekc?

check for damage, (damaged screws o the bottom show its been opened) and make sure the OS is in tact
