What is the best, most reliable site to find local dog breeders?
My mother-in-law has a dog that is ready to breed, but she doesn't know where to find a mate. Where can she go to find one locally? More specifically, is there a site that can locate individuals that have postings (aside from a place like craigslist)?

I want to thank everyone for your answers so far. I don't know a lot about dogs at all, and the guy with whom the dog was purchased is gone, so we are trying to help her out with this dog. I will do some more research on this subject. Again, I appreciate all of your answers.
If this dog was really "ready to breed" then you wouldn't need to be asking these questions on here.
It sounds like you and your mother-in-law are so way off of understanding what is required when breeding dogs then you should just totally forget it and get her spayed.
Anybody with a dog ready to breed will have all health certification necessary - and that is hip and elbow scores etc. and not just a quick trip to the vets. That would of only been done if the b*tch were suitable for breeding because she is an excellent example of her breed.
Your MIL would be looking around for the most suitable stud dog based on many features that she needs to enhance or diminish and would of been looking at suitable show dogs for the last year or so to know what she is looking for.
Just get her spayed before you end up with puppies with health problems to pass on to unsuspecting owners.
I'm sorry but she does not have a dog to breed. She has a pet quality dog that SHOULD NOT breed. & no reputable breeder would breed to her dog. He dog is JUST pet quality & not worthy of breeding.
No reputable breeder will advertise on the net. Or in your local newspapers. Some times they have waiting lists for their pups that are two or three litters a head. People just waiting for that one special dog they are willing to pay the price for.
Her dog is not one of these dogs. It is only pet quality & should be spayed ASAP. Do not pollute the already growing pet population with more poorly bred dogs.
