I am looking to give my little ratty something to do or to play with during the day when I am busy with my kids. I would like any ideas of toys or games that can be homemade that would be safe but enjoyable for a rat that isn't a youngster anymore (He's almost 1). Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Thanks for the great ideas. Unfortunately he is unable to be with a cage mate since he dislikes other rats and fights with them (got him from a rescue and he was the only single rat they would adopt out). I have heard of using the hard boiled eggs but never done it, though I am sure he would love that. I look forward to trying a few of these ideas and seeing what he is interested in!

How bout instead of my typing endlessly, I just send you here: http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm
That link is nothing but rat toy ideas, with instructions on how to make it all yourself.. Even the hammocks.. I myself, am not good at sewing, so I bought one instead.. But my rats adore ALL the toys and games I've made for them using this site.
They, of course, love toilet paper rolls. Ratty pinatas. Fishing for peas. And I made them a digging box that they can spend an hour in easily :). I've made others as well.. Just thought I'd name a few I've tried myself :).
You can cut out hammocks from old jeans, use the legs and make a sleeping bag. Wrap a treat in a bunch of tissue and he'll tear it open to get at it. Put treats in a little box that's filled with stuff like paper and safe scraps of items and let him dig in it. Hard boiled eggs are a nice treat and fun to open (Yes, they can eat the shells!)
What i would really suggest you do is get him a cage mate and properly introduce them, the quality of a rats life, and even their life span, increases with a cage mate. It will top any toy you can give him.
If you have any citrus trees you can cut a few limbs off, bleach them and rinse thoroughly. It is a harder non porous wood so the bleach is ok, but you want to make sure you aren't bringing any bugs or anything in. Doing this gives them something to climb on and it will wear the nails down as well. Not homemade, but you can get the cat toys with the bell in the middle (really cheap) and they can toss them around, maybe put a little peanut butter on the bell and they will chase it around trying to get to it. Target used to have doggy chew toys that were rope bones for $1 and i would hang those around for them to climb on as well. If you can spend a little money, bird toys are great for rats. I look at petsmart for anything they have on sale. It sounded like you only had one rat, getting it a buddy is recommended. Have fun making it fun for your rat!
well all i had was hamsters but there a lot alike.... so what i used 2 do was get like 2 paper towel roles n 3 toilet paper roles and make it like a latter shape mine loved them i also made tissuebox beds n stuff like that
