He lives super far away though (California to Switzerland), and he doesn't know me well at all (except as that one girl that sent him an email) and he doesn't know I like him.
Now he isn't like super old, he is 8 years my senior, and I am going to be 17 when I can meet him.
Any ideas on how to go about asking him out and dating him?

that is if he wants to date you, so you would have to think about that 2, but if you know that he likes you then just email ask him how he's been etc. if he makes conversation good if he dosent he;s not interested, ask him what he does for fun etc. and then as the conversation progresses ask him if he has a gf? if he dosent then get more flirty till you get the confidence to ask if he wants to talk on the phone or text or something good luck
