Constantly "acquiring network address" message won't allow me to connect to internet?

Question

I have Windows XP SP3 operating system on an old laptop.

I restarted my computer after having run the memory cache clear process last night on my computer (I usually don't turn off my computer I just Stand-by it alot) so it had been restarted in a week or so.

Once I re-started everything started up like normal but then the down in the on bottom panel, it showed the icon of trying to connect to a internet connection with yellow moving icons i.e. "Acquiring Network Address" if you move your mouse over it. 

Now I cannot connect to the internet.

Nothing about my network setup has changed and I can still connect ot internet via XBOX Live.

I run a NON-wireless (use cables) network, through Dynex Switch (not a router) to a Cable Modem.

Anybody have any ideas on things to try?

I ran ipconfig /all and all Ip info is 0.0.0.0 but DNS servers show up.

If you have no router, you cannot run two or more devices at the same time, to the internet. I suspect since you reset the laptop, the xbox now has the public IP address, and your laptop fails to get one. Turn off the xbox, power cycle the modem, then turn on only the laptop, it should get the public IP after a few minutes...

could be the internet popping out of your service that its no longer working...attempt resetting the modem or unplug it and turn each and every thing off and start up up it returned and. verify your lights on the modem are green...which in the event that they're pink it means its no longer your modem yet youre in simple terms no longer getting out of your cyber web service
