Dash lights stopped working on my 1997 VW Jetta - How to fix this?

Hi, I assume this problem is similar across many makes and models. A few days ago my Jetta's dash lights stopped working. The turn indicators and high beam lights work fine on the dash. It's just the general back lighting on the dash that helps you see the speedometer and other gauges at night. Any ideas on what the problem might be and how I would go about fixing this? Thanks!

Where would the rheostat switch be located?

I don't think it's a fuse. I found this site that lists the fuses and none seem to refer to the dash lighting.
