Many of them were brought up in religion and became atheist because of doubts, or after studying the religion more thoroughly, or other religions. (To shut up above) Actually a survey was taken and athiest's appear to know more about religion than religious people do. Take a loot at the article below.

I was brought up a Muslim. Now, being 15 and mature enough to reason, I am skeptical of all religions. I've never been down the road or anything; I dare think what most believers dare not to (or simply put, thoughts that are considered blasphemous). I think the only reason people believe blindly is that they are afraid of thinking outside of the boundary, and their inabilities to consider something deeply before eventually embracing it; believing every lies shoved down their throat.

In the US? No. In Europe or Asia? Probably.
It depends on the culture. We really don't have organic atheism in the US yet. Atheists are still a negligible minority, and most US atheists I've ever spoken with were raised with religion, including myself.

I am an atheist, and brought up by atheists, but I know a few atheists who have had religious families, and after researching proof and analyzing the bible, they became atheists.
