In many cases, such as in Revelation, they are not prophecies at all but astrotheological statements. As we have seen, all sorts of people have twisted the OT comments to appear to be predicting Christ

To keep god and priests on the gravy train for 2000 years. If men had written the bible so everyone could understand it kings and emperors would not have had to rely on their priests for guidance.
The Church is like your common storybook villain. Everything has to go completely according to plan. A good example would be the case of Galileo. When he told people that the world was NOT the center of the universe and that you can't see heaven above or hell below Earth, the Church had him at house arrest. The worst part is, of the 1 billion Christians in the world, very few know of these things.
