Why is this happening in yahoo messenger?

Whenever I answer a question in Yahoo Answers a box pops up on the computer screen of one of my messenger friends and tells them that I have answered a question and then shows what the question was along with my answer. While I don't necessarily have any problem with my friend seeing my Yahoo Answers activity neither one of us knows why or how this is happening. I have to assume that one or the other of us must have clicked button somewhere without realizing that it was going to create this situation, only we can't figure out how to undo it. If someone could tell me what happened and how to rectify it I would appreciate it.

They are Yahoo Updates also known as Status Updates:

TO STOP YOUR OWN UPDATES APPEARING:

Click on "Messenger" in the top left hand corner of the Messenger Pane.

Click on "Manage Updates I Broadcast".

This will take you to your Profile page. (Now called Pulse).

UNTICK the box "Share my Updates".

Click on "Save" at the bottom of the page.

You can also choose which Updates you want to share from your Pulse page. To do this, click on the "Settings" tab. Then click on "Manage Updates" under "Updates". If you want to share some of them, TICK the box "Share my Updates". Choose the ones you want to share and then click on "Save" at the bottom of the page.

TO MANAGE THE UPDATES FROM YOUR CONTACTS:

Click on "Messenger" in the top left hand corner of the Messenger Pane.

Click on "Preferences".

Click on "Yahoo Updates".

Click on the box "Customise Yahoo! Updates".

Untick the boxes next to your Contacts' names for the updates you do not wish to see.

Click on "OK" at the bottom.

Please note that these Updates may take a couple of days to clear.
