Microsoft Windows Error Phone Scam?
WARNING: Have you had a call like this?
I received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Windows Technical support regarding a large number of error reports generated from my PC. He was polite, very plausible and sounded as if he was from an Indian call centre. I was curious as my PC does generate several error reports daily and have often wondered what Microsoft does with this information but was also suspicious and followed the caller’s instructions to
1. Log on to my PC.
2. Open 'computer management' and filter the 'application' and 'system' error report logs. He told me that the large number of error reports indicated that my computer was seriously infected by viruses and directed me to:
3. Log on to www.ammyy.com and click on a link. This would have provided him remote access to my PC.
I chose not to do this and instead asked more questions about him and his company. He became uncomfortable and gave me his name as Shaun Samson, phone number as 08055 280642 and 2globe as his company. I then pointed out that this was not the information he had provided earlier and was certainly not from Microsoft Windows support. At this stage he politely thanked me and hung up! I have since found out that other people have been taken in by this scam, provided credit card details for new virus removal tools and had their bank accounts wiped out.
