My computer just lost the row of icons on the left side of the screen?

This took me to places like my appointment calendar. I don't know how, but I did something that hid them. Now I can't retrieve them. So I can't retrieve my appointments either. Does anyone have any advice ?

Right click on the blank desktop screen. The pop-up box says View. Under View, click Show Desktop Icons. Good luck.
