The 2004 subaru WRX will sometimes have a fuel odor in the cabin when the car is started in moderately cool temperatures. The problem is described in ODI resume PE 04-002. The manufacturer says the problem occurs in very cold temperatures and stops quickly. Some owners have reported it to happen in moderate temps, below 50F, and lasts for 20 to 30 minutes. The problem may occur in other Subaru models.

There is a Service Bulletin #09-36-03 that describes how to fix the problem. I'd recommend checking with your Subaru dealer to see if the fix has been applied. If not, regardless of mileage or age of the vehicle, I'd ask that it be fixed under warranty.

Some vehicles have had a break between the filler head and the gas tank tube connection (NOT specifically your car). Make sure you do NOT spark anything near it. Check for factory service recalls/repairs for your make/model/year.

This is just 1 potential idea.

the gasket for the pump and sender as probably gone in the top of the tank in some cars u have a panel under the back seat to get at it if not the tank needs to come off to get at it

perhaps the vent line is damaged and you have dribbled a little gas into that. the fuel in that line would smell for a bit.
