It's french, apparently it's a place so its meaning must be very obscure and date way back to france origins. There's a castle there and it's got its own crest.

I had never heard of this word before, and I couldn't find it in my Oxford English Dictionary. I tried alternative spellings, but still no result. I also tried various technical and scientific dictionaries, with no success. This lead me to think that it is either very modern English, or not English at all. It is in fact French. Tiffauges is the name of a municipality in the Pays de la Loire region of France. It has some historical importance because it was the site of a battle between the monarchists and the republicans during the French Revolution.
