vegetarians/vegans? Where do you draw the line?

Would you be ok with someone eating a frog?...would you be ok with someone eating a tarantula?...........would you be ok with someone eating a spider?..........How about an ant?.....Are you ok with eating plants where pesticide was used to kill millions of bugs? Where do you draw the line? When you drive down the road are you afraid of running over bugs? I am seriously looking for a logical, honest answer of where you draw the line and why?

On a side note. Have you thought of all the animals that are used to make clothing and shoes and other products?

Well, of course I have thought about animals killed for clothing... I would be surprised if any vegan or even vegetarian hadn't! That is why I don't buy fur/leather/suede/silk et cetera.

Basically I draw the line at what is practical for me. So let's be simple about it;

Is it practical for me to buy plant foods instead of animal products to eat? Yes.
Is it practical for me to avoid animal-derived clothing? Yes.
Is it practical for me to not eat plants because of pesticides? Not really.
Is it practical for me to never drive or use public transport for fear of crushing insects? No.
Is it practical for me to effectively be a Jainist? Not really.

These are the types of questions I ask myself when deciding where I draw the line. I put animal welfare/rights before my own enjoyment, but not before my own survival and/or practicality. That's pretty much how I figure things out, because as much as I would like to put animals first I obviously must put myself first (because if I didn't, the logical option would be suicide). :)

Hello :)

I draw the line at the plants :) I would try my best to eat only organic vegetables, because I wouldn't like to think that insects were being killed unnecessarily, but I don't consider many insects to be incredibly sentient, so I wouldn't overlook non-organic fruit/vegetables if there were no other options, and I wouldn't turn down food that someone else had made if it weren't organic :)

As for your side note, of course! It would be a very ignorant vegan indeed who hadn't considered those things ^_^ I don't wear any material which has come from an animal, or use any products that have been tested on animals :)

Have a nice day.

I'd be ok with someone else eating any of those things. Makes no odds to me.

I wouldn't be particularly happy with eating the bugs etc that you list, but I expect most people will say that whether they're veggie or not.

I'd be more concerned about eating pesticide than the resultant bug death from its use. If bugs want to hurl themselves at my windscreen, there's not a lot I can do about that.

I'm aware that animals are involved in the manufacture of clothing, however I don't eat my clothes.

You're assuming everyone is vegetarian for animal rights issues. They aren't.

Ha my girlfriend is a vegetarian and I actually asked her some of those same things (spiders and frogs). She said no, mostly because they're spiders and frogs. She's not a vegan, so she doesn't do go ape-s**t on people, but i think vegans are against pesticide treated food, opting for more organic stuff.

if im honest i dont really care, im vegetarian and it was for animals but other reason to and i dont go all mad telling people what they can and cant eat me personally i think the whole oh i cant eat honey because its taking it off the bees, i find it nuts really nuts, i dont eat meat thats it im not out to change the world or go all never use animal prouducts because vegans need to face facts every body uses animal products they CANNOT be avoided completly they are in the roads we walk on small animals are killed in the harvesting of the vegetables we eat, so people who say the dont use any animals products are pure liars.
